Mariquitx

second skin examines skin as a permeable boundary, a channel that holds vulnerability and care as we come into contact. Working with natural latex, Mariquitx creates elastic, translucent membranes that mimic skin. Bringing in elements of opposite nature, including gauze, wires, and tattoo needles, the external world of stimuli and the inner realm of sensations are juxtaposed. second skin invites us to consider how one triggers the other. Abstracted hidden words and geometric patterns appear on the raw latex surfaces as scar-like marks, and the semi-transparency of the skin reveals what lies beneath.  Each piece is a reflection of the temporary channels of vulnerability that surge in the tattoo ritual. 

Just like skin, latex is alive and in constant flux. Mainly associated with the Brazilian rubber tree, latex is a natural secretion with healing purposes, of various trees and plants. This association to wounds and healing first inspired, and continues to fuel the artist's inquiry into the material. Inspired by Eva Hesse, whose work embodies mutability and the belief that, as life, art doesn’t last, Mariquitx embraces the metamorphosis of each piece over time. The bark of trees, the skin of insects, the hair and feathers of animals, and the epidermis of humans, are coverings forever being shed, given over to non-life. New coverings are constantly forming beneath the old, and close to this surface or more deeply hidden, life brings forth its web of creation.

second skin investiga la piel como un límite permeable, un canal que contiene vulnerabilidad y cuidado cuando entramos en contacto. Utilizando caucho natural, Mariquitx crea membranas elásticas y translúcidas que imitan la piel. Incorporando elementos de naturaleza opuesta, como gasa, alambres y agujas de tatuaje, se yuxtaponen el mundo externo de los estímulos y el ámbito interno de las sensaciones. second skin (segunda piel) nos invita a considerar cómo uno desencadena al otro. Palabras abstractas ocultas y patrones geométricos aparecen en las superficies crudas de caucho como marcas que asemejan cicatrices, y la semi-transparencia de la piel revela lo que yace debajo. Cada pieza es un reflejo de los canales temporales de vulnerabilidad que surgen en el ritual del tatuaje. 

Así como la piel, el caucho está vivo y en constante cambio. Principalmente asociado al árbol de caucho brasileño, el látex es una secreción natural con propósitos curativos de varios árboles y plantas. Esta asociación con las heridas y la curación primero inspiró, y continúa alimentando la investigación del artista sobre el material. Inspirade por Eva Hesse, cuya obra encarna la mutabilidad y la creencia de que, al igual que la vida, el arte no perdura, Mariquitx abraza la metamorfosis de cada pieza con el tiempo. La corteza de los árboles, la piel de los insectos, el pelo y las plumas de los animales, y la epidermis de los humanos son cubiertas que constantemente se desprenden, entregadas a la no-vida. Nuevas coberturas se forman debajo de las viejas, y cerca de esta superficie o más profundamente oculta, la vida despliega su red de creación.
